Within discussions on sustainable housing in the Global South, the issue of unplanned  and incremental housing is a reality for the majority of poor dwellers worldwide. While incremental, unplanned building practices are presented as unsustainable, new resource scarcities intensify the need for more sustainable building materials and practices, with recognition of the broader social-material and political context within which this issue is located. This goal of project to identify niches for sustainable transitions in the housing sector and new innovative practices related to the use of sustainable materials, reuse and recycling, and incremental construction and planning. The goal of the workshop is to develop a future research proposal on this topic with potential partners. The workshop is open to a broad range of interested participants from the private sector, NGOs, government, universities, and other research institutes.
